Globally, over 2 billion people have poor or no access to safe drinking water and half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas by 2025 (WHO report, Nov 2016). Poor water quality is a serious public health issue with 80% of diseases in the developing world being water-borne and lead to 1 in 5 deaths under the age of 5. Even in the developed world, exposure to pesticides, antibiotics & pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals (e.g. arsenic, lead) remains a significant concern.
Ensuring the availability of safe water and sanitation is one of the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
There is an urgent need for new technology that can provide clean contaminant free water in a cost-effective and sustainable way. G2O has developed a graphene oxide based coating technology for existing membranes demonstrating improved rejection ratios whilst increasing the water flux and the potential for good long-term performance due to improved fouling resistance.
The combination of high throughput at low pressure and tailored separation of a variety of contaminants makes G2O’s technology suitable for point-of-use water purification systems.
